About Sculp and Scape
Sculp and Scape is a Sydney based business owned and operated by Dave Walker. Sculp and Scape aims to create unique sculptures for inside and outside the home or workplace. The sculptures can be done on commission, purchased from stock or available for hire if you would like to use them for a function or to style your home for potential buyers.
Dave Walker has over 20 years experience in Structural Landscaping, Horticulture and Irrigation.
“I fell in love with sandstone when learning my trade in landscape construction. My first employer taught me well. Leading the way with high attention to detail and teaching me to always carry something through to completion”
By utilising the mineral banding in the stone Dave creates a dynamic look of movement in each sculpture. The lines in the stone can change dramatically from mild to heavy depending on the mineral banding, creating a free flowing effect despite the static nature of the stone.
“Each stone piece that I work with is unique in its banding, colour and texture. I love that even though there may be similar themes in the sculptures, they are all individual”
“Of all the landscape elements, sandstone has always been my preferred choice of material to work with”

The Sculpting process
All of the sculptures go through the following stages:
Design – sketches are done (over and over) to get scale, balance and overall feel of the scupture
Templates or Free styling – Templates are cut out to form a 2 dimensional shape to keep scale and form, while free styling is used when a sculpture can evolve while carving.
Carving/Polishing – Both hand and machine techniques are used, and while some machines are used in the process, wet fed grinders/drills/saws/polishers the process it is all done by eye.
Sealing – Penetrative sealers are used on the sandstone sculptures.
Surface protection – where needed bumpers or felt pads are placed on the bottom of the sculptures to protect surfaces such as bench tops.
Inspiration
Dave’s inspiration come from his love of the ocean and nature.
‘I have been surfing and enjoying the ocean ever since he can remember, my inspiration comes from the seas currents, waves, swell and movement’.
‘I also get inspired my nature in general, flow, growth, colour and movement’.
‘Sometimes what I end up carving is not at all what I set out to create, sculptures seem to evolve as I carve them, especially if I am not using a template” “One idea or sculpture can develop into 10 more as I let my imagination flow”
Stone Sourcing
Sculp and Scape uses the best quality stone from selective Sydney/NSW quarries.
